Future Workforce / Academies of Construction Science

Academies of Construction Science

AGC of America has been one of the driving forces behind the growth of construction career academies across the nation. From 2005 through 2007, AGC supported nine such academies through a U.S. Department of Labor grant, including one in the Greater Houston Area.

Locally, AGC Houston in committed to construction career academies because they have a proven record of increasing attendance and graduation rates among at-risk students, while preparing students for a future in the construction industry - whether they want to go straight into work or continue their education through an apprenticeship program, two- or four-year degree. In 2009, AGC Houston signed Memorandums of Understanding with both the Aldine and Houston Independent School Districts to create and support Academies of Construction Science at five area high schools. The Academies are located at Mac Arthur and Aldine Senior High Schools in the Aldine Independent School District and at Sterling, Scarborough and Furr High Schools in the Houston Independent School District.

The goals of the partnership between the school districts and AGC Houston are to focus on college and careers in the construction, architecture and engineering industry; raise student aspirations and commitment; increase student achievement and inspire a sense of citizenship and responsibility to the community.
