Thanks AGC Houston Members For Making The 26th Annual Barbecue Cook-Off A Huge Success!

Even with a massive rain storm Friday night, more than 4,000 people converged on the Sam Houston Race Park to enjoy the festivities at the client networking parties hosted by 38 cook teams. On Saturday, the clouds parted in time to welcome 4,000 more attendees to the family fun day, which featured numerous children activities in the Kids’ Zone. To all of our cooking teams, sponsors and volunteers, thank you for making this one of the best barbecue cook-offs in AGC Houston history. Congratulations to the teams that placed and took home an award, and a special thanks to the 2017 Barbecue Cook-off Committee, our sponsors and volunteers for making this such a successful event. Scroll down for a list of winners.

For two days, cook teams manned their barbecue pits around the clock, smoking brisket, chicken, ribs and other delicacies. Bands and djs helped to create a party atmosphere on Friday night as revelers feasted on margaritas, crawfish, barbecue and danced into the late hours. On Saturday, under a bright blue sky, families filled the Kids’ Zone which featured two trains, inflatable bouncy houses, a rock wall and face painting, among numerous other children activities hosted by cook teams.

Many thanks to the volunteers who assisted with the entry-tasting competitions in the Carl Lee Judging Pavilion. Teams competed in the Bloody Mary, Open Dish, Brisket, Chicken and Ribs categories. For a full list of the Barbecue Cook-Off Cook teams and event sponsors, click here.

By 4:30 p.m., the entries were tallied and announced by Jerry Nevlud, AGC Houston President/CEO on the AGC Houston Grand stage. Nevlud also introduced the founder of Camp Hope, who was presented with a $15,000 check. This year, cook teams raised funds during the two-day event to benefit Camp Hope, which provides interim housing for wounded warriors, veterans and their families suffering from combat related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in a caring and positive environment.

Thanks to the students who came from Prairie View A&M, University of HoustonSpring ISD and the Early College Academy at Southridge to volunteer their services at our event! We also are extremely thankful for the help we received from members who planned, sponsored and hosted the Barbecue Cook-Off and Fair. This year, AGC Houston presented Tellepsen’s Ezra Wilson with the Ralph Morton Spirit Award for his invaluable service on the Barbecue Cook-Off Committee.
